Virtual Classroom System Requirements

Our virtual classroom operates through a web-based application. For this reason we suggest that you preferably use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, as Safari users have experienced problems in the past.

The minimum requirements for running BigBlueButton may differ based on the device and browser you’re using. This page provides an overview of the necessary specifications, including the browser, operating system, and bandwidth.

Typically, if you have an average internet connection, a recent computer, and the latest version of Chrome, Firefox, or Edge, you should meet all the minimum requirements.

To check if your setup meets these criteria, you can test it anytime by joining https://test.bigbluebutton.org/. This link will take you to a private test room where you can try sharing your audio, video, and screen.

The suggested web browsers are:

For Desktop/Laptop: Chrome, Firefox, or Edge (latest versions).
Please note that IE and legacy Edge browsers are not supported.

Regarding operating systems, since BigBlueButton operates within the browser, it’s platform-independent. Therefore, operating systems like Windows 10 or Windows 11 are suitable as long as they support the latest versions of the recommended browsers.

For users accessing BigBlueButton via desktop or laptop devices:

For hardware, a laptop or desktop with a minimum of 4GB RAM and a processor speed of 2+ GHz (any computer purchased in the last three years should suffice), or any Chromebook with 4GB RAM and a processor speed of 1.5+ GHz.
For bandwidth, a minimum of 1.0 Mbps upstream and 2 Mbps downstream is required. You can check your bandwidth using https://speedtest.net/.
Preferred web browsers include Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge.
For audio, it’s strongly advised to use a headset to ensure clear voice transmission and avoid causing echo or background noise for others. Any basic headset with a built-in microphone will suffice; an expensive one is not necessary. Alternatively, a laptop with a built-in webcam and microphone will suffice if you’re in a quiet environment.
